One day Helios, the sun god, went up to give the earth light then went home. When he got home his mortal son, Phaethon, asked him a desire. His father said that he would grant Phaethons greatest desires so he listened to his son's desire. Phaethon wanted to ride his fathers chariot for one day. Well his father would have said no but couldn't, so he granted his wish. The next day Phaethon got ready and his father gave him the power that made him able to hold on to the reigns that held the steeds to the chariot. Phaethon set off and thought he was doing well but little did he know that he was steering off course and ran right into one of the four winds that was brewing up a storm. He got thrown off the charriot along with the four steeds. Zues ,the lightning god, was watching the chariot fall and didn't want to totally destroy the human race ,scince the chariot was made up of the sun, so he blew it up. All the pieces fell and cracked up the earth and dried some rivers and lakes, as for Phaethon he fell in to a river never to be seen again. The sisters mourned for about four months about their brothers loss. Zues the lightning god was tired of the sisters crying, so he turned them into poplar trees. Their legs turned into roots and their arms turned into branches. |
